Generation We!

This is an awesome video that I heard about from Lisa’s Brass & Ivory Blog.

Generation WE: The Movement Begins… from Generation We on Vimeo.

Seeing this actually came at a good time. My daughter who has big ideals, has been having a hard time with some of her studies as of late, and I have been on her to get things completed and turned in (on time), and it has been very frustrating for both of us. I know part of it is her age and just the struggle of learning responsibilty in gerneral, but we have really been talking about the importance of getting a good education, and that it is especially important that she learn all she can right now as now is when she is building the foundation for her future education. The basics she learns or doesn’t learn right now will affect how easy or how hard school will be for her in the future.

As soon as I could, I played this video for my children. I talked to them about the fact that they are not only this country’s, but also this world’s future. Something, which I was kind of surprised at their reaction to. My son looked at me in disbelief and said “But Mom, we’re just kids”. I explained to him that even though they are young, and small right now, it doesn’t mean that what they do doesn’t have an impact on the world around them. Quite opposite infact, they don’t realize it, but they have the potential to have an influence on other kids even by how they choose to act. How they choose to behaive, or not behaive, weither or not the treat others with respect. Many kids out there do not have role models, and if they exhibit qualies of good character, it encourages others to follow suit. The ripple affect, and the pay it forward mentalities, can cause a lot of good in our world.

I think it is our role as parents to empower our children with the knowlege that they do matter, and there is a purpose for them to be here. Their presence, even if not planned by their parent at the time, was planned by God, and they are here for a reason. Their actions, their thoughts, their lives… they are all important and they all matter.

I believe that it is when kids get left feeling alone, helpless, and that their ideas, and THEY – in general, aren’t important, that is when problems set in. Its much easier to be apathetic, and cause problems, when you don’t think what you do really affects anyone else. People (including kids) tend to act out when they are trying to prove to themselves that they do matter. The attention that they get gives them the feedback that they are searching for. Thats why it is so important that negativity is not the only kind of attention we provide our offspring.

Carpet, Countertops, and Linoleum.. Oh my!

Deon and I went and worked on the jobsite on Friday and guess what! We had stairs! I didn’t get a picture as I forgot my camera, but will have to take a picture to put up here.. Not sure why stairs are so exciting to me, but they really are! lol.

While there, Al (I think his title is project coordinator) came by and asked us to find some time and go by Rice’s Furniture in town here, and select our carpet and linoleum.  Saturday Morning we headed down there. There were about 8 – 10 choices (give or take) of each to choose from. They also had us choose a countertop when we were there. We chose a predominately black one that had tiny white lines in it here and there. It was very exciting, because now I can start to even picture what it will be like!

Here is what we chose for the linoleum:

because of Haiden’s allergies, the downstairs will all be this linoleum except for the downstairs bedroom which will have carpet. Upstairs the bathroom & the “utility” room (which will turn into a homework/reading room) will have the linoleum as well.

Carpet will go on the stairs and in the bedrooms upstairs, the carpet we chose looks like this:

We feel so blessed to be able to do this! And for all the great people at Habitat. Al, Marianne, Brenda  have been so great answering questions and getting things situated so that even in worse case with my MS, our home will be less of a challenge.  We feel very lucky to have the group we have working on our project. The contractor Jim is awesome! He always explains things to us and helps us understand what is going on, and seems to show great attention to detail which I very much appreciate. Makes us feel very confident in how it all will turn out. There are a few more consistant volunteers that are out there off and on that we will definately want to make sure we thank before this project is done, Mike and Larry C, and Ben are a few who it has always been a pleasure to work with. Also many thanks to Dawn and the people at the Restore who have contributed to make this possible!

Is Hate on the rise?

I think I’d like to sleep for the next two weeks, wake me up on Nov 5th…  unless McCain wins.. then give me a few more days to compose myself…

I have a TV, but no cable or regular TV stations. I think I should be thankful to have NOT had it during this campaign. I really don’t understand the attraction to being part of a problem rather than a solution. Why are there so many hateful people out there?  Where do these people come from.. so many interviews with people sporting plastic catty smiles on their miserable faces.. saying things that make my bottom jaw hit the floor! I did not realize! Is this what our country is like outside my mostly calm little bubble? Angry, Drama-driven, division-creating, small minded people. I understand freedom of speech but come on! There are some things that just step over the line, and any talk insinuating murder.. even if meant in jest, is not funny… EVER! Its not acceptable behaivor to even joke… Why do people not know this?

It always amazes me how some people can go on and on and  talk about things that they don’t have any actual information on. They will repeat whatever dribble they have been fed, without any regard to what is truth, not even attempting to verify what they have been told. And then what is really scary is that and they repeat it with such conviction, and make it personal to them.

They are content enough to just simply believe what their given and jump aboard any given bandwagon. It is frightening that  because these people are out there promoting hateful words, actions, and ideas, and worse.. they actually believe the falsehoods they spew.

It makes me sad for my children.. I hope I can infuse enough life affirming, hope, and common sense into my children that they aren’t ever attracted to that kind of behavior.

Out of the running!

Dear Political Smear forwarders,

I am pleased to announce that I am now officially out of the running! My Vote for Obama has been cast, and is safely delivered to its appointed box, which means that it is now  wasted energy to send me crazy-talk propiganda to try and sway my vote.  I couldn’t change my vote know if I wanted to.. Ha! There is actually a sense of relief that comes with that thought, and a sense of pride in that I have done my part. Now all that is left is to sit back, pray for God to guide people to make good decisions based on fact, and not the overwhelming amount of half-truths and complete lies that are out there floating around.

On a serious note: I encourage everyone to do their best to forge their opinions out of what makes sense to them.. beware of anything that is said or presented in a similiar tone to that of a rumor you would have heard about someone in high school.

Get out and VOTE!, Do your part! because like we’ve always been told, If you don’t vote, then you have no right to complain about what you end up with! 🙂

My last words for this topic, is that I believe change can be good… after all, like the quote says……. “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.”

Political Signs

I’ve seen McCain/Palin Signs around, and while they definately aren’t my choice, I would never physically ever take someone’s sign out of their yard, or do anything to disfigure it. The beauty of this country is that we have freedom of speech and the freedom to express our opinions, and everyone is allowed their opinion.

That being said, I have seen a few different signs around town that have been disfigured.. and I kind of wonder what “Political Sign” that the disfigurement represents. Personally I would not want to be part of a group that did that sort of thing. I hope its not a “Sign” of our times, or a “Sign” that people think they did something cool by defacing other’s property. All it does when I see that kind of thing, is make me think of what a small mind the person who did it must have…

Then today, I recieved an e-mail with what I thought was a very clever picture. I don’t know where it originates from, or who’s yard it is, but I thought it was very creative, and said it all!

Good Intentions exploited…

If you haven’t heard, there have been two seperate news stories recently where people have abandoned their children.

There is a Nebraska Law, that  was meant to protect the lives of infants by allowing a parent to leave them at any state-licensed hospital , and not have to fear prosecution for abandonment. It was set in place to decrease the amount of unwanted babies being left in dumpsters and such, but this law does not set a specific age limit.

Reports say that 17 children overall have been abandoned via this law. Included in that number was the 9 children abandoned by an “overwhelmed” father last month, as well as The 14 year old girl abandoned this past Tuesday. Even worse, the 14 year old girl is reported to actually be from Iowa, which means people are now traveling to Nebraska just to abandon their children.  How horrible!

I understand the idea of what the law was intended for, but look at how people take advantage. Its one thing to be overwhelmed, but that is when you should be reaching out for help. It makes it too easy for kids, especially teenagers to be abandoned when things get rough.

On one end, Devil’s Advocate could argue that the kids are better off then living with someone as irresponsible as the ones dropping them off, but I think it shows just how much our society is crumbling. We have a nation of children, and I’m not talking about all the ones under the age of 18 either! People who when push comes to shove, are willing to just abandon their children and never look back. No wonder we have problems. Selfishness has run-a-muck! I seriously hope that Nebraska alter’s their law somehow to still be able to protect infants and young children, and find some middle ground as far as older children in possibly offering counseling or something.

Life is like Hot Chocolate

No, I didn’t mess up the Forrest Gump line.

Recieved the following story in an e-mail. Really liked it.. so thought I’d share.

A group of graduates, well established in their careers, were talking at a reunion and decided to go visit their old university professor, now retired.  During their visit, the conversation turned to complaints about stress in their work and lives.  Offering his guests hot chocolate, the professor went into the kitchen and returned with a large pot of hot chocolate and an assortment of cups – porcelain, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite – telling them to help themselves to the hot chocolate.

When they all had a cup of hot chocolate in hand, the professor said: “Notice that all the nice looking, expensive cups were taken, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones.  While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. The cup that you’re drinking from adds nothing to the quality of the hot chocolate.  In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was hot chocolate, not the cup; but you consciously went for the best cups… And then you began eyeing each other’s cups.

Now consider this: Life is the hot chocolate; your job, money and position in society are the cups.  They are just tools to hold and contain life.  The cup you have does not define, nor change the quality of life  you have.  Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the hot chocolate God has provided us.  God makes the hot chocolate, man chooses the cups. The happiest people don’t have the best of everything.  They just make the best of everything that they have.  Live simply.  Love generously.  Care deeply. Speak kindly. And enjoy your hot chocolate.

VP Debates… My take..

I watched the VP Debate last night.

My opinion following ~ feel free to disagree, that is one great thing about the country we live in. 🙂

Gov. Palin did a better job when compared to her more recent interviews, however I must say that when the bar is set so low, it isn’t much of a compliment that she did better than normal.

Just curious, I wonder how many times you can actually use the phrase “He/We are Maverick’s” as a substitution for explaining just “How” you plan to change things? “Reform” is one of her other favorite words. So I know what the word “Reform” means, but again, what is the plan behind it? Its one thing to say “Yes, we need a change”, but its another to have plans on how to cause that change to happen. I would even hope that things would be planned out enough to where you would have at least a small understanding of any repercussion of what you are proposing.

I get it.. I understand that the Republican campaign wants America to know that in the past John McCain “has been viewed as a Maverick”, “taking shots from all sides” since change is what everyone is clamoring for, this should sound appealing… but truth be told, I really don’t care for an empty phrase used over and over and over again. Tell me not about what his past reputation is. Talk about what policies are to be changed, and how they are different from the present ones. That is what I want to know.. just a small simplified explanation would do.. Not a bunch of appealing, and patronizing words about how great our people and our country is. I am not in love with John McCain as she seems to be ( as evidenced by her amorous smile whenever she says his name.. lol), and I want at least some small evidence that there are some thought out plans behind these “pretty” words.  If it is their desire to help us get things going in the right direction, then you need far more than pretty words thrown out by a past pageant winner who still knows how to smile for the camera, and say cutesy things when she doesn’t know how to answer a question.

That may be unfair to say, but truly I haven’t been impressed at all. I kind of think what started out as a blatant ploy to attract Hillary votes, has been forced to change gears because (while I’m not a Hillary fan neccessarily) this woman is no Hillary. The things she does bring to the republican side is that she’s attractive, and has some slight charisma going for her, so she can be Mrs. Hokey Mom and at least play the part of someone who is supposedly just like you or me, from a “small town” at least that is the idea they are wanting to portray. The reason this is especially beneficial to the current Republican ticket, is because John McCain, while being a “Maverick”, also has been thought of as being “Out of touch” with the American people. Palin is their answer to combat this.. Look! Look! She’s from a “Small Town”.. that will balance it all out right?

That is fine, and it is a little harsh on my part, but I will remind you that every village has its idiot. Being from a “Small Town” doesn’t automatically equate that you have similar views and motives as John Q. Public.  (Joe Six-pack?… really? One of her interviews was the first time I had ever heard that used as a name to describe just a normal regular person…. ok, I’ll bite.. a six-pack of what?.. What is being insinuated here?)

The Health Care Plan, she talked about a tiny bit, but in my own mind I figured that my current coverage costs through my employer end up being far more than the $5000.00 that they’d alot.. and it put simply, my coverage isn’t the greatest.  The idea that there would be more competition is good.. however, I’m not sure that there would be any reason for them to lower costs for better coverage. I could see them continuing to offer substandard coverage at the $5000.00 rate, and if you wanted or needed something better, that it would cost you even more…

As I said in previous posts, I am not political at all. I do not care what affiliation any politician is with as it is my perhaps nieve hope that it is the person that can make a difference, not what party they come from, so it is not a political affiliation that causes a bad taste in my mouth from listening to Palin.  I hope and pray that the American people aren’t swayed by just saying a bunch of words that sound appealing with very little to back it up.  That … or I hope I’m dead wrong and that if by chance the McCain/Palin ticket prevails, that there are some ingenious plans that they just didn’t share with us…   but I doubt it…
